Frequently Asked Questions:
What is 3D scanning, and how does it work?
3D scanning uses a combination of cameras, lasers, and light to accurately measure an object’s size and shape without the need for physical contact. The scanned data is then processed to create a 3D file for use in manufacturing, record keeping, or CAD.
What size objects can you scan?
Typically, we can scan objects as small as a coin, to as large as a double-door fridge.
What types of objects can be 3D scanned?
We can scan almost any object. We can scan objects either in place or using a turntable. Additionally, we can travel with our equipment and perform a scan on-site for immovable large objects.
How accurate is 3D scanning?
Our typical accuracy range is 0.03 ~ 0.01mm depending on the object’s size, surface finish, and scanning mode used.
Do you scan objects with intricate details or fine textures?
Yes, 3D scanning can capture intricate details and fine textures.
How long does a 3D scan take?
The time it takes depends on several factors. But typically for small to medium objects, the process takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to complete. Larger objects might take a full day or longer to scan depending on the amount of detail required.
What can I use a 3D scan for?
You can use the data for reverse engineering, prototyping, restoration, or digital archiving.
What file type is the scanned data supplied in?
Depending on your preference, we can supply the point cloud or the meshed model.
Available cloud point file types: .ply, .obj, or .asc
Available meshed model file types: .3mf, .stl, .gltf, .obj, .fbx, or .ply
Can the scanned data be used directly for manufacturing?
Often, the scanned data is sufficient for 3D printing, part replication, or modeling.
However, for precision manufacturing the scanned data is only the start of the process. The final step involves importing the scanned data into specialized software to create a solid body CAD model. The final CAD model can be used for precision manufacturing such as CNC.
Price for 3D scanning:
How much does 3D scanning cost??
Each job has its own set of variables that affect the end price. We can provide a free quote based on the job, and your requirements.
What is the minimum charge?
Our minimum charge for 3D scanning is $225.00 (incl GST)
What factors affect the price?
There are several factors that affect the price. For example:
- Size of the object
- Geometry complexity
- Surface finish and/or color of the object (dark and shiny objects take more time)
- Location of scanning (for example, is travel required)
- Level of accuracy required
- Do you require the scanned model or a precision CAD model (precision CAD models take more time to create)
